Welcome to Sake Kura Hotel
Kawasaki-shuku.
Presented By Kikkawa Brewery
Founded in 1912 in Isehara (Kanagawa Prefecture), the Kikkawa Brewery has been crafting sake for over 100 years. Tucked away in the foothills of sacred Mt. Oyama, for centuries the area has been a site of rain worship, and thus is also known as Afuri-yama (rainfall mountain).
Pure water is essential for brewing high-quality sake, and the brewery uses the clear water from an underground stream fed by the meltwater of Mt.Oyama for everything from washing rice to brewing.
Kikkawa is closely linked with nearby Oyama Afuri Shrine, providing the sake presented to the gods enshrined within. The beautiful kanji character for Afuri that you will see on each bottle was specially calligraphed by the head priest.
We hope to bring our century of dedication to brewing award-winning sake to making Sake Kura Hotel Kawasaki-shuku an unforgettable retreat.
A Postal Town
For a New Age
In ancient times the Tokaido Highway connected Edo (now Tokyo) and
Kyoto. Along the route were postal towns, where travelers would stop to
rest and refuel during the long journey. Kawasaki was a very important stop
along this busy route, and there are many ukiyoe block prints that depict
the town and wide river travelers would cross to reach it. Our kura
storehouse is part of this long history of welcoming visitors, and we hope to
provide both hospitality and a peaceful retreat for our guests at Sake Kura
Hotel Kawasaki-shuku.
Check-In
At the Bar Counter
Step up to the counter lined with sake barrels and rice bales, and forget
about the world outside of the eaves under the kura’s tiled roof.
Into The Floating World
Housed in a former kura storehouse, we want our hotel to feel like you have
stepped back in time into the world portrayed in ukiyoe wood block prints.
The space is decorated with art both old and new inspired by the “Fifty-
Three Stages of the Tokaido Road” by Hiroshige Utagawa, and is dotted with
antique decor and furnishings.
A Sake Lover’s Dream
Guests can enjoy as much Afuri sake as they like during their stay, a perk of
being a hotel run by a sake brewery! Try around 5 different types of sake
each day, and discover new ways to enjoy the drink, such as our special
Afuri highball.
All drinks are included in the room rate.
Cocooned in Beauty
Vintage Imari porcelain, precious kimono, and indigo-dyed art create a
timeless, retro atmosphere in each room, a serene retreat for you to relax,
enjoy time with friends and family, or just spend a contemplative evening
with a book and glass of craft sake.
Local Soul Food
to Start Your Day
Welcome the day with freshly made omusubi rice balls, including a local
Kawasaki specialty: Nara chameshi, rice steamed with chestnuts, beans and
millet. The delicate seasonings bring out the flavor of the rice. The omusubi
can also be taken to your room or to-go if you prefer.
